Frequently Asked Questions

Why the Flu Vaccine Is Important
Influenza (flu) is caused by a virus that spreads mainly through droplets produced when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Flu complications can be more severe in the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic medical conditions. Vaccination is an effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu virus.
Why the HPV Vaccine is Important in Preventing Cervical Cancer
HPV and Cervical Cancer Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of more than 150 related viruses. Each HPV virus in this large group is given a number, which is called its HPV type. HPV is named for the warts (papillomas) that some HPV types can cause. Some other HPV types can lead to cancer. Men and women can get cancer of the mouth/throat and anus/rectum caused by HPV infections. Men can also get penile cancer from HPV. In women, HPV infection can also cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. However, there are vaccines that can prevent infection with the types of HPV that most commonly cause cancer. In fact, cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women. More than 500,000 women develop the disease each year worldwide, and 250,000 women die from cervical cancer. Yet, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers.
Protecting Yourself Through Vaccination
We currently offer two types of HPV vaccines: 2-valent HPV vaccine (Types 16 and 18) 9-valent HPV vaccine (Types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58) Each of these vaccines must be taken in a 3-dose course for the vaccination to be completed. The second dose is usually taken 1-2 months after the first dose, and the third or last dose is taken 6 months after the first dose. For Singaporean females aged 9-26 years old, the 2-valent HPV vaccinations are Medisave-claimable, up to $400.

As the name indicates, travel vaccinations are recommended when travelling to certain countries/areas, and also dependent on the time of the year (seasonality).

Here’s a quick overview of the various vaccinations recommended when travelling overseas.

When Should Travel Vaccinations be Administered?
