    What is a Gastroscopy?

    Gastroscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube is used to look inside the oesophagus and small intestine. A gastroscopy can be used to screen for symptoms or confirm a diagnosis. It can also be used to treat a condition.

    Your doctor may recommend a gastroscopy to investigate the cause of symptoms, such as:

    • Abdominal pain
    • Difficulties swallowing
    • Heartburn or indigestion
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Reduced number of red blood cells (anaemia)
    • Sudden, sharp pain in your abdomen

    What is a Colonoscopy?

    Colonoscopy is a procedure where a flexible tube is used to look at the inner lining of the large intestine. A colonoscopy may be used to examine your colon lining and detect any abnormalities within the large intestine and rectum.

    Colonoscopy is typically recommended once every 10 years for individuals who

    • are 50 years old and above
    • have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps

    The frequency of screening may vary depending on individual risk factors.

    Your doctor may also recommend a colonoscopy to investigate the cause of symptoms, such as:

    • Abdominal pain / Persistent abdominal discomfort
    • Constant fatigue
    • Change in bowel habits, for example, consistent diarrhoea or constipation
    • Presence of blood or mucus in the stool
    • Severe / unexplained weight loss
