What to Expect From a Comprehensive Health Screening in Singapore
A full body health screening in Singapore is a preventive assessment designed to identify potential health issues before symptoms develop. It combines clinical tests, physical examinations, and, where appropriate, imaging scans to build a clearer picture of your overall health.
Think of it as a systematic check of your body’s key systems, carried out while you still feel well.
Most screening programmes begin with core assessments such as height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, and tests of liver and kidney function. These provide a useful overview of your general health and establish a baseline for future monitoring.
More comprehensive screening programmes may include additional investigations such as detailed lipid profiling, thyroid function tests, tumour markers, and imaging studies like ultrasounds or X-rays. These tests can provide further insight into specific health risks and areas of concern.
The right screening programme depends on your age, gender, lifestyle, and family medical history. More testing is not always better. What matters is selecting the investigations that are most relevant to your individual health needs.
The Benefits of a Regular Annual Health Screening
A single screening gives you a snapshot. A regular annual health screening in Singapore gives you something far more useful: a trend.
Year-on-year data allows your doctor to spot incremental changes that a one-off result would never reveal.
A fasting blood glucose reading at the higher end of normal may appear unremarkable in isolation. Tracked across three consecutive years, that gradual upward shift becomes a clinically meaningful signal, allowing your doctor to recommend lifestyle adjustments or early intervention before a pre-diabetic state develops.
The same principle applies to blood pressure, cholesterol levels, kidney function, and liver markers. Conditions that progress silently over years respond best to early action.
A general health screening in Singapore is not a one-time exercise. It is an ongoing process of monitoring your health, supported by data that becomes more valuable over time.
Who Needs a Comprehensive Medical Screening Package?
The honest answer is: most adults benefit from some form of structured medical screening. The question is which level of screening is appropriate for where you are in life.
Young Adults (18–39)
For younger individuals in generally good health, a foundational medical screening package in Singapore focuses on establishing baseline metabolic markers: blood glucose, cholesterol, liver and kidney function, and blood pressure. These readings matter less for what they reveal today and more for the reference point they create for future comparisons.
For this age group, screening once every two to three years is generally sufficient, unless risk factors or family history indicate otherwise.
Adults Over 40
From 40 onwards, the clinical picture broadens. A comprehensive health screening in Singapore at this stage typically incorporates cardiac risk assessments, tumour markers for early cancer detection, thyroid function, and structural imaging such as abdominal ultrasounds.
The likelihood of clinically significant findings increases with age, and the value of catching them early increases proportionally. Annual screening is recommended from this point onwards.
Those With Family History or Lifestyle Risk Factors
Regardless of age, individuals with a family history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer, or those with high-stress lifestyles, irregular sleep, or sedentary habits, may benefit from a more comprehensive screening protocol earlier than standard guidelines suggest.
For this group, annual screening is advisable, with targeted follow-up tests in between where recommended by your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Health screening includes a series of comprehensive physical examinations, tests, or procedures used to detect a disease or determine health risks, even when a person shows no symptoms.
- Most basic health screenings include common tests such as measuring Body Mass Index (BMI), blood tests for sugar and cholesterol, and blood pressure measurement, liver and kidney function tests.
- Some health screenings can also include treadmill stress tests, thyroid function tests, chest-xrays and more.
- Ultrasounds are not only used during pregnancy, they are also used for examining internal organs such as the kidneys, liver, pancreas, bladder, and more during health screening. Abdominal ultrasounds measure blood flow to your internal organs, and is used to check for conditions such as tumours, cysts, fluid collection, blockages, etc.
- Mammogram & Pap Smear for ladies. A women’s health screening usually includes a mammogram, a pap smear test, and a pelvic exam. Ideally, women over the age of 40 should go for mammograms annually and perform monthly breast self-examination to check for signs of breast cancer. Additionally, regular pap smears are recommended for women who have had sexual intercourse to help screen for cervical cancer.
On top of early detection of diseases, health screenings also identify health risks an individual may face in the future. Monitoring blood glucose levels through blood tests, for example, can detect a pre-diabetes state, which can help the individual kickstart a change in his lifestyle and diet to prevent diabetes onset later on.
Also, certain conditions may not show any signs and symptoms. Very often, individuals with high blood pressure may not feel any symptoms but the increase in blood pressure can stress out the heart and blood vessels. This eventually causes damage over time and can potentially lead to a heart attack or stroke. Health screenings and regular health check ups can help prevent this through early detection.
Your post-screening review will be conducted by our doctor via an audio call. The telereview is typically scheduled 2 weeks after your health screening appointment.

For most healthy adults, once a year is a reasonable baseline. If you are over 40, or have a family history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer, more frequent or targeted screenings may be appropriate. Our doctors can advise on the right frequency during your consultation.
MediSave covers selected screening tests under MOH’s approved list, including certain cancer and chronic disease investigations. It cannot be used to cover a full private health screening package. Check the latest MOH guidelines or speak with our team before your appointment for clarity on what is claimable.
A basic screening covers foundational markers: blood pressure, BMI, blood glucose, and cholesterol. A comprehensive package adds tumour markers, advanced imaging, thyroid assessments, and gender-specific tests such as mammograms and pap smears. The difference is depth, not just price.
Why are specific tumour markers included in a medical screening package, and do they confirm cancer?
No. Elevated tumour markers do not confirm cancer; many non-cancerous conditions can raise marker levels. They are included to flag results that may warrant further investigation by a specialist. Your doctor will interpret any abnormal findings within your full clinical picture.
Schedule at least five days before or after your menstrual period for gynaecological tests including pap smears and pelvic examinations. There is no strict cycle-related timing for mammograms, though many women find the week following menstruation more comfortable. Contact our team when booking if you are unsure.
Do not panic. An abnormal result means a finding needs further review, not that something is seriously wrong. Your post-screening consultation, scheduled within two weeks, is the right time to discuss your results. If a specialist referral is needed, Lifescan’s connection to the Singapore Medical Group network means that pathway is already in place.
