What is a gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube is used to look inside the oesophagus and small intestine. A gastroscopy can be used to screen for symptoms or confirm a diagnosis. It can also be used to treat a condition.

Who should go for a gastroscopy?

Your doctor may recommend a gastroscopy to investigate the cause of symptoms, such as:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Difficulties swallowing
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Reduced number of red blood cells (anaemia)
  • Sudden, sharp pain in your abdomen

What is a colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is a procedure where a flexible tube is used to look at the inner lining of the large intestine. A colonoscopy may be used to examine your colon lining and detect any abnormalities within the large intestine and rectum.

Who should go for a colonscopy?

Colonoscopy is typically recommended once every 10 years for individuals who

  • are 50 years old and above
  • have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps

The frequency of screening may vary depending on individual risk factors.

Your doctor may also recommend a colonoscopy to investigate the cause of symptoms, such as:

  • Abdominal pain / Persistent abdominal discomfort
  • Constant fatigue
  • Change in bowel habits, for example, consistent diarrhoea or constipation
  • Presence of blood or mucus in the stool
  • Severe / unexplained weight loss

  1. Package does NOT include other procedures or treatments such as medications, additional laboratory tests, biopsies, and removal of polyps.
  2. Packages must be used within 3 months of purchase and are non-transferable, non-refundable, and cannot be exchanged for other items or services, or redeemed for cash.
  3. Any follow-up services are considered “add-ons” and must be paid by cash, debit, or credit cards.
  4. Appointments must be scheduled at least 3 working days in advance and are subject to availability.
  5. Lifescan Medical & Wellness reserves the right to modify packages (including pricing) at any time without prior notice, as well as to alter terms and conditions or cancel any packages and promotions without notice.

What to Expect

Kindly note that your health screening process will take about half a day or more depending on the package selected, and you may be required to proceed to several locations for various tests.

  1. Identity Card/Passport for registration and verification
  2. Staff pass (for corporate clients)
  3. Previous medical records (e.g., doctor’s memo, X-ray films, ECG/medical reports) or any current medications
  4. Sportswear if you have a Treadmill Stress Test scheduled
  5. Glasses for vision tests (please avoid wearing contact lenses)
  1. Complete the Health History Questionnaire sent to you via email or SMS before your appointment.
  2. Fast for at least 8 hours before your appointment, as some tests (e.g., blood tests and abdominal ultrasounds) require fasting. You may drink plain water.
  3. Do not take diabetic medications (oral or injectable) on the morning of your appointment. You may continue with your regular high blood pressure and/or heart medications.
  4. For ladies: Schedule urine, stool, pap smear tests, or pelvic examinations 5 days before or after menstruation to ensure accurate results.
  5. Specimen containers for stool and urine tests will be provided on the day of screening. Alternatively, you may collect them from our clinic before your appointment.
  1. A review appointment will be arranged by our staff before you leave the clinic. This appointment will occur within 2 weeks following your screening, allowing the doctor to review your results and suggest any necessary follow-up.
  2. Your summary report will be available on the SMG Health+ app within 7 working days following your screening. You will be notified through the app so you can review the results before the review appointment with your physician.
