The Importance of Vaccines

The Importance of Vaccines

We all know by now that COVID-19 vaccines are essential in reducing the risk of severe illness and death. But did you know that there are many other vaccines recommended for adults? If you are unsure what vaccine to get, fret not—we have compiled this handy guide for you.

Vaccines teach our body how to fight off an infection. When germs get in, our immune system kicks into gear with white blood cells. They remember the invaders so that we can fight them off better next time. Vaccines work by pretending to be an infection, so this process prepares our immune system to tackle future infections. In general, sometimes, after a vaccine, you might experience mild symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle aches and fatigue.

When an imitated infection occurs, specialised white blood cells like B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes are activated. These cells play crucial roles: B-lymphocytes facilitate antibody production to combat infections, while T-lymphocytes eliminate compromised cells, such as those that viruses have taken over. Importantly, these white blood cells retain the memory necessary to confront actual diseases in the future.

Vaccines are important because they protect individuals against certain diseases and reduce complications, morbidity, and mortality. They help our body make the right cells to fight infections. If you do not get vaccinated, you’re more likely to get sick from diseases that could have been prevented.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has established the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS) to provide guidance on the recommended vaccinations for persons aged 18 years and above. This schedule aims to prevent infections and mitigate associated risks. Some of the key vaccines include:

  1. Influenza: Recommended for all healthy adults, frequent travellers, and caregivers. It is crucial for vulnerable groups like the elderly, pregnant women, and those with certain medical conditions.
  2. Pneumococcal conjugate (PCV13) and pneumococcal polysaccharide (PPSV23): Essential for adults over 65 to prevent pneumococcal diseases.
  3. Tetanus, reduced diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap): Preventing tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. This is especially recommended for pregnant women.
  4. Human papillomavirus (HPV): Recommended for women and men to prevent HPV-related cancers.
  5. Hepatitis B: For adults aged 18 to 59 to prevent hepatitis B infections.
  6. Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR): Protects against mumps, measles, and rubella with long-lasting immunity.

Varicella: Prevents chickenpox caused by the Varicella-Zoster Virus.

These vaccines are available at all our Lifescan Medical clinics.
